See, nowadays we like to use a lot of slang terms and colloquialisms in our spoken & written language. I’ve been infected as well and since I started writing in the forum, I reckon my standard of English is dropping by nanoseconds!! I dunno but somehow it just seemed ‘fun’ using all these slang terms like wei, woi, boh, neh, ar, nolar...it really adds ‘flavour to the expressions especially in written words where you can’t emote through facial expressions...
It’s like speaking to the Hongkies…somehow or rather you’ll tend to speak like them, ie in a sing-song way, speak the 1st word in a high tone then the next word in a low tone…(no offence to the Hongkies, ok) Maybe it’s our Malaysian culture...if you notice, most Malaysians are very “versatile” and adaptable to their environment wan..when they are overseas and they speak to the angmohs, they tend to speak with an “angmoh slang”, then speak to the Hongkies, use Hongkie slang, speak to S’poreans, use Singlish, come back to Malaysia, speak Manglish.. ie mixture of English, Malay, Chinese, Indian language…
Once, an angmoh told me that he’s really impressed with us Malaysians cos we could speak so many languages and seemed to be able to switch from one language to another effortlessly…it was then that I began to appreciate the diversity of our multi-cultural country…
My sister used to berate me for using so much of these slang terms which our Malaysians are very fond of doing. “Wei, where to makan ar?” “Over there lar dwoing” “Got shops there meh?” “Who said dun haf?”…these are some of the common phrases which me and my frens like to use in my everyday conversations. So, when I talked to her (and write emails) I make sure I use proper English (if i do write, then i do a spell check before sending the mails) I remember when she was the editor for her college mag, she used to throw some essays submitted by her team members for me to read through. And sometimes, the command of English and grammar structure is so bad that we ended up laughing our heads off!! Also confessed to laughing over my classmates essays during schooltimes. I know this is bad but just can’t help it lar. Well, this has kinda become a habit of mine now, where I would automatically spot typo errors or grammatical errors when reading through any reading materials...LOL
